Tissot Tradition Powermatic 80 Open-heart: Review

If you are looking for a Swiss-made mechanical (automatic or hand-wound) dress watch without breaking your budget (too much), this might be the right blog post for you.

Disclaimer: I admit I am a bit biased as this watch is linked to a special moment in my life.

The Tissot Tradition Powermatic 80 is an elegant Swiss-made dress watch with a price tag around $750 USD, which is not bad for a Swiss-made watch. I would consider it an entry-level luxury Swiss watch, where Swiss quality meets Swiss watch making heritage at a reasonable price. It is a light and thin (only 9.4mm) dress watch that will suit business and business casual settings, but it might look out of place on a hike or at the gym, for instance. A downside of such a slim design is a small crown, which is not very comfortable to wind.

It has a clean, classical open heart dial, which has a textured pattern in the center, and a matte black section around it that is separated by a steel ring. There are no numbers except the roman numeral 12 at twelve o'clock, just above the open heart section. The case is made of the stainless steel and has beautiful polishing, which is expected for a luxury Swiss watch. All this gives the Tissot Tradition Powermatic 80 a clean, elegant, and simple, yet interesting, look.
The watch features an exposed cased back where you can see Powermatic 80 movement with additional  engraving of a sun ray effect on the rotor (a semi-circular weight that is mounted on the movement). This little touch adds to the look of the movement and gives the appearance of a sophisticated, well-thought out mechanism.

It has a deployant butterfly style clasp which is common on upmarket dress watches.

It offers only 30 meters water resistance. In other words, it has splash resistance only and is not recommended to be exposed to water.

To summarize, the Tissot Tradition Powermatic 80 is not necessarily an ideal everyday watch and can be said to have only limited utility. However, it is a very good option if you are planning to wear it in the office, for instance. It’s a budget friendly Swiss-made piece of horology (compared to other Swiss made pieces with some comparable features).
